RAIC Emerging Practitioners

Engaging with Our Future

Based on research on Canada’s regulators and Schools of Architecture

What is Architecture?

As architects, we are responsible for re-imagining the world.”

2015

As architects, we are responsible for re-imagining the world.” This statement, made by Professor Arthur Wrigglesworth during a review, took my breath away. I had never thought through the implications, or, as Professor George Kapelos was fond of saying, “unpacked,” the word “architecture.”

BEcoming an Architect

Sustaining Our Future

April 7, 2014

The Interns’ Forum (TIF) was established in 2012 by the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) Council and charged with conducting a review and evaluation of the process to become an architect with a particular focus on the Internship period. In exploring ways the journey from student to intern to architect, the committee reviewed the needs of four constituencies: Interns, Practices, The Profession, and The Schools.

MENTORSHIP

I believe the inclusion of interns and emerging professionals is critical to the future of Architecture. As a member of RAIC Emerging Practitioners I brought a group of interns together for the IAP Task Force. I have since spearheaded the initiative to found Canada’s first advocacy group for interns and emerging practitioners. I have been a key member of a core group responsible for the development and set-up of RAIC EP, which was officially launched this June at the Nanaimo Festival. Currently, I am a member of the steering committee and head of the Knowledge and Resources sub-committee. My involvement in the OAA Interns’ Committee (launched as “TIF 2”) was instrumental in establishing it as a permanent OAA Committee, resulting in numerous initiatives to involve and benefit interns. In 2016, I conducted research on regulators, Universities, and advocacy groups abroad and analyzed surveys and data to establish and position the need for RAIC EP and its priorities. (Con Ed Session: RAIC Emerging Practitioners, RAIC Festival Nanaimo, BC) As well as contributing to the Mentorship Workshop at the OAA Conference in Toronto ON.
